Multiplication
Equal groups and arrays
What your child practises
Understanding multiplication as equal groups, arrays, repeated addition and skip counting. Easier sets use 2s, 5s and 10s; stretch sets go beyond 5 × 5.
Saskatchewan Curriculum outcome: N3.3 · multiplication as repeated addition and equal groups
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practise.
- Multiplying means equal groups.
- 3 × 4 means 3 groups of 4.
- An array shows the groups as rows and columns.
Example: 4 × 5 = ? That is 4 groups of 5. 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20. Answer: 20

Question 5
Which multiplication matches the array?
🐞🐞🐞🐞🐞🐞🐞🐞🐞🐞- 5 × 3
- 5 × 2
- 5 + 2
- 6 × 2
Show answer
5 × 2
