Grade 4 Fractions worksheet
from Gradelings Β· Name: ______________________
How to explain it
- The bottom number is how many equal parts. The top is how many we have.
- Equal fractions name the same amount: 1/2 = 2/4.
- Same bottom: compare tops. Same top: more parts means smaller pieces.
Example: Which is bigger: 1/6 or 1/9? Same top number, 1. 9 parts are smaller pieces, so 1/6 is bigger. Answer: 1/6
Question 1
Put the fractions in order from least to greatest.
- 1/7
- 1/3
- 1/9
- 1/5
1/9 β 1/7 β 1/5 β 1/3
Hint: They all have 1 part. The more pieces a whole is cut into, the smaller each piece. So the biggest bottom number is the least.
Question 2
Which sign goes in the box?
4/10 3/10
- <
- =
- >
>
Hint: Both fractions are cut into 10 equal parts, so the parts are the same size. 4 parts is more than 3 parts.
Question 3
Which fraction is equal to 1/5?
- 2/10
- 8/10
- 1/10
2/10
Hint: Multiply the top and the bottom by the same number: 1 Γ 2 = 2 and 5 Γ 2 = 10. Same amount, just more pieces.
Question 4
What fraction is shaded?
answer box
3/8
Hint: Count all the equal parts (8). That's the bottom number. Count the shaded parts (3). That's the top number.
Question 5
Jay ran 1/9 of a trail. Lena ran 1/6 of the same trail. Who ran farther?
π- They are the same
- Lena
- Jay
Lena
Hint: Both ran 1 part. A trail cut into fewer parts has longer parts, so the smaller bottom number is farther.
Question 6
Which fraction is greater than 1/2?
- 5/12
- 4/10
- 4/5
4/5
Hint: Double the top number and compare it with the bottom number. For 4/5: 4 + 4 = 8, which is more than 5, so it's more than half.
Question 7
Which fraction is the least?
π- 1/3
- 1/6
- 1/5
1/6
Hint: Think of sharing one pizza. Sharing with fewer people gives bigger slices, so a smaller bottom number means a bigger fraction.
Question 8
What fraction goes where the ? is?
- 2/4
- 1/4
- 3/4
- 3/5
3/4
Hint: The space from 0 to 1 is cut into 4 equal jumps. Count the jumps (not the tick marks) from 0 to the ?.
Question 9
Zoe ate 1/4 of a pizza. Ana ate 3/4 of a same-size pizza. Who ate more?
π- Ana
- They are the same
- Zoe
Ana
Hint: Both pizzas are cut into 4 equal slices. Compare the number of slices: 1 and 3.
Question 10
Lena painted 4/5 of a fence. Zoe painted 1/4 of a same-size fence. Who painted more?
π¨- Lena
- Zoe
- They are the same
Lena
Hint: Compare each fraction with 1/2. 1/4 is less than half, and 4/5 is more than half.
Answer key
- 1. 1/9 β 1/7 β 1/5 β 1/3
- 2. >
- 3. 2/10
- 4. 3/8
- 5. Lena
- 6. 4/5
- 7. 1/6
- 8. 3/4
- 9. Ana
- 10. Lena
