How to explain it
- The radius goes from the centre to the edge. The diameter goes all the way across: d = 2r.
- Circumference (the distance around) is C = π × d.
- Area is A = π × r × r. Use π ≈ 3.14.
Example: A circle has diameter 10 cm. What is its circumference? C = π × d. C ≈ 3.14 × 10 = 31.4. Answer: About 31.4 cm
Question 1
A circle has a radius of 25 m. What is its circumference? Use 3.14 for π and round to one decimal place.
⭕r = 25 manswer boxm
157.0 m
Hint: C = 2 × π × r ≈ 2 × 3.14 × 25 = 157. Rounded: 157.0 m. (Or double the radius to get d = 50, then 3.14 × d.)
Question 2
A circle has a diameter of 8 cm. Using 3.14 for π, what is its area?
⭕d = 8 cm- 50.24 cm²
- 12.56 cm²
- 200.96 cm²
- 25.12 cm²
50.24 cm²
Hint: First find the radius: 8 ÷ 2 = 4. Then A = 3.14 × 4 × 4 = 50.24 cm². (Using the diameter instead of the radius makes the area 4 times too big.)
Question 3
A circle has a radius of 18 cm. What is its diameter?
⭕r = 18 cm- 72 cm
- 36 cm
- 9 cm
- 18 cm
36 cm
Hint: The diameter is two radii laid end to end: 2 × 18 = 36 cm.
Question 4
A circle has a diameter of 11 cm. What is its circumference? Use 3.14 for π and round to one decimal place.
⭕d = 11 cmanswer boxcm
34.5 cm
Hint: C = π × d ≈ 3.14 × 11 = 34.54. Rounded to one decimal place: 34.5 cm.
Question 5
A circle's circumference is 69.08 cm. What is its diameter? (Use 3.14 for π.)
answer boxcm
22 cm
Hint: C = 3.14 × d, so d = C ÷ 3.14 = 69.08 ÷ 3.14 = 22 cm.
Question 6
About how many times longer is a circle's circumference than its diameter?
- About 4 times
- A little more than 3 times
- Exactly 2 times
- A little less than 3 times
A little more than 3 times
Hint: C ÷ d = π ≈ 3.14, which is a little more than 3.
Question 7
A round pizza has a diameter of 16 cm. What is the area of its top? Use 3.14 for π and round to one decimal place.
🍕d = 16 cmanswer boxcm²
201.0 cm²
Hint: Radius = 16 ÷ 2 = 8 cm. A = 3.14 × 8 × 8 = 200.96. Rounded: 201.0 cm².
Question 8
A circle has a radius of 11 cm. What is its area? Use 3.14 for π and round to one decimal place.
⭕r = 11 cmanswer boxcm²
379.9 cm²
Hint: A = π × r × r ≈ 3.14 × 11 × 11 = 3.14 × 121 = 379.94. Rounded: 379.9 cm².
Question 9
A circle has a diameter of 6 cm. Using 3.14 for π, what is its area?
⭕d = 6 cm- 9.42 cm²
- 113.04 cm²
- 18.84 cm²
- 28.26 cm²
28.26 cm²
Hint: First find the radius: 6 ÷ 2 = 3. Then A = 3.14 × 3 × 3 = 28.26 cm². (Using the diameter instead of the radius makes the area 4 times too big.)
Question 10
A circle has a diameter of 24 cm. What is its radius?
⭕d = 24 cm- 24 cm
- 6 cm
- 48 cm
- 12 cm
12 cm
Hint: The radius goes from the centre to the edge: half the diameter. 24 ÷ 2 = 12 cm.
