Grade 7 Volume worksheet
from Gradelings · Name: ______________________
How to explain it
- Volume is the amount of space inside a 3D object.
- For a prism: volume = area of the base × height.
- Volume is measured in cubic units, like cm³.
Example: A box is 4 cm long, 3 cm wide and 2 cm high. What is its volume? Base area: 4 × 3 = 12 cm². Volume: 12 × 2 = 24. Answer: 24 cm³
Question 1
What does the volume of a container tell you?
- How much space is inside it
- How much area its base covers
- How tall it is
- How far it is around the outside
How much space is inside it
Hint: Volume measures the space a 3-D object takes up or holds, in cubic units.
Question 2
A cylinder's circular base has an area of 78.5 cm². The cylinder is 6 cm tall. What is its volume?
- 84.5 cm³
- 235.5 cm³
- 1478.94 cm³
- 471 cm³
471 cm³
Hint: Volume = base area × height = 78.5 × 6 = 471 cm³. The base area already includes π, so don't multiply by 3.14 again.
Question 3
A box is 7 cm long, 7 cm wide and 10 cm high. What is its volume?
answer boxcm³
490 cm³
Hint: V = l × w × h = 7 × 7 × 10 = 49 × 10 = 490 cm³.
Question 4
A box has a volume of 320 cm³. It is 4 cm long and 10 cm wide. How tall is it?
answer boxcm
8 cm
Hint: V = l × w × h, so 320 = 4 × 10 × h = 40 × h. Divide: h = 320 ÷ 40 = 8 cm.
Question 5
A cube has edges 9 cm long. What is its volume?
- 108 cm³
- 486 cm³
- 81 cm³
- 729 cm³
729 cm³
Hint: All three dimensions are 9 cm: V = 9 × 9 × 9 = 729 cm³. (81 is the area of one face.)
Question 6
Which container holds more? (Use 3.14 for π.)
Container Shape Size Can Cylinder r = 3 cm, h = 15 cm Box Rectangular prism 10 cm × 4 cm × 7 cm - The can
- They hold the same amount
- The box
The can
Hint: Can: 3.14 × 3 × 3 × 15 = 423.9 cm³. Box: 10 × 4 × 7 = 280 cm³. The can holds more.
Question 7
A cylinder has a radius of 4 cm and a height of 14 cm. What is its volume? Use 3.14 for π and round to one decimal place.
answer boxcm³
703.4 cm³
Hint: V = π × r × r × h ≈ 3.14 × 4 × 4 × 14 = 3.14 × 224 = 703.36. Rounded: 703.4 cm³.
Question 8
1000 cm³ holds 1 L. How many litres of water fill a fish tank 35 cm × 20 cm × 40 cm?
answer boxL
28 L
Hint: Volume: 35 × 20 × 40 = 28000 cm³. Divide by 1000 to change to litres: 28 L.
Question 9
A cylinder has a radius of 1 cm and a height of 8 cm. What is its volume? Use 3.14 for π and round to one decimal place.
answer boxcm³
25.1 cm³
Hint: V = π × r × r × h ≈ 3.14 × 1 × 1 × 8 = 3.14 × 8 = 25.12. Rounded: 25.1 cm³.
Question 10
A box has a volume of 180 cm³. It is 6 cm long and 5 cm wide. How tall is it?
answer boxcm
6 cm
Hint: V = l × w × h, so 180 = 6 × 5 × h = 30 × h. Divide: h = 180 ÷ 30 = 6 cm.
