Times as Many

Compare by multiplying

What your child practices

Multiplicative comparison: reading 35 = 5 × 7 as “35 is 5 times as many as 7”, and solving “times as many” problems, which are different from “more than” problems.

Alabama Course of Study content standard: 4.1; 4.2 · multiplication as a comparison and times-as-many word problems

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. “3 times as many” means multiply by 3.
  2. “3 more than” means add 3.
  3. If you know the bigger amount, divide to find the smaller one.

Example: Ana has 4 stickers. Jay has 3 times as many. How many does Jay have? 3 times as many as 4 is 3 × 4. Answer: 12
