Numbers to a Million
Read, write and compare big numbers
What your child practices
Place value to 1,000,000: digit values, standard and expanded form, number words, rounding, ordering, and using benchmarks like 500,000 on a number line.
Alabama Course of Study content standard: 5.3 · place value in multi-digit numbers
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Each place is worth 10 times the place to its right.
- Read big numbers in groups of three digits: thousands, then ones.
- To compare, start at the left-most place and look for the first difference.
Example: Write four hundred twelve thousand, three hundred five in digits. Thousands group: 412. Ones group: 305. Put them together: 412,305. Answer: 412,305

Sample questions
A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.
Question 1
Which number is closest to 250,000?
- 245,100
- 301,900
- 193,300
- 24,510
245,100
Hint: Find how far each number is from the benchmark. Check the number of digits too: a number with fewer digits is much smaller.
Question 2
What number is 10,000 more than 198,975?
answer box
208975
Hint: Only the ten thousands digit should change by 1. If that digit is 9, regroup with the place to its left.
Question 3
Write this number using digits: six hundred eighty-six thousand six hundred ninety-four.
answer box
686694
Hint: Split the number at the word “thousand”. Write the thousands part, then the last three digits. Use a 0 to hold any empty place.
Question 4
What number is 300,000 + 60,000 + 50 + 8?
answer box
360058
Hint: Each part fills one place value. Write the digits from the greatest place to the ones, and put a 0 in any place that is missing.
Question 5
In 400 517, what is the value of the digit 5?
- 5000
- 500
- 50
- 5
500
Hint: Name the place of the 5, counting from the right: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands. The digit is worth 5 of that place.
Question 6
Put these numbers in order from least to greatest.
- 535,834
- 355,384
- 553,384
- 535,384
355,384 → 535,384 → 535,834 → 553,384
Hint: Compare the greatest place first. If those digits match, move one place to the right, and keep going until the digits are different.
