Coordinate Grid
Plot points (x, y)
What your child practices
Naming and plotting points in the first quadrant of the coordinate grid, and reading what a point means in a real situation.
Alabama Course of Study content standard: 5.20 · graphing and reading points in the first quadrant
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- A point is written (x, y).
- Start at (0, 0). Go right x units, then up y units.
- Points on the x-axis have y = 0.
Example: Start at (0, 0). Go 4 right and 2 up. Where are you? x = 4, y = 2. Answer: (4, 2)
Coordinate Grid in Alabama
In the Alabama Course of Study, this is unit 12 of 15 in 5th grade Math, after Parentheses & Expressions and before Multiply & Divide Fractions.
Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
Sample questions

Question 1
Which point is on the x-axis?
- (5, 5)
- (5, 0)
- (0, 5)
- (9, 5)
(5, 0)
Hint: Points on the x-axis have a y-coordinate of 0.
Question 2
Point A is at (7, 2) and point B is at (7, 3). How many units apart are they?
- 4
- 1
- 5
- 7
1
Hint: The points line up, so subtract the numbers that change.
Question 3
What are the coordinates of point A?
- (6, 9)
- (9, 7)
- (9, 6)
- (8, 6)
(9, 6)
Hint: Go across first (x), then up (y).
Question 4
Start at (0, 0). Go 2 units right and 9 units up. Where are you?
- (11, 0)
- (2, 9)
- (9, 2)
- (2, 2)
(2, 9)
Hint: The first number is how far right. The second is how far up.
Question 5
A plant grows 2 cm each week. On a graph, x is weeks and y is height. Which point shows week 3?
- (3, 5)
- (3, 6)
- (6, 3)
- (2, 3)
(3, 6)
Hint: After 3 weeks the plant is 3 × 2 = 6 cm. x first, then y.
Question 6
Point A is at (1, 1) and point B is at (4, 1). How many units apart are they?
- 3
- 2
- 5
- 1
3
Hint: The points line up, so subtract the numbers that change.
