Right Triangles & Scaling

Pythagoras and changing dimensions

What your child practices

Using the Pythagorean relationship for ladders, ramps, roofs and diagonals, deciding whether a triangle is right-angled, and seeing how doubling or tripling dimensions changes perimeter, area and volume.

Alabama Course of Study content standard: GDA.19; GDA.36 · the Pythagorean Theorem in context, and how scaling changes lengths, areas and volumes

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. In a right triangle, a² + b² = c², where c is the longest side.
  2. Scaling sides by k scales area by k².
  3. Check that your answer fits the picture.

Example: A right triangle has legs of 3 and 4. What is the hypotenuse? 3² + 4² = 9 + 16 = 25. The square root of 25 is 5. Answer: 5

Right Triangles & Scaling in Alabama

In the Alabama Course of Study, this is unit 7 of 18 in 9th grade Math, after Similarity & Scale and before Right-Triangle Trig.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
