Build with Blocks

Balls, boxes, cans and cones.

What your child practices

Practices naming and describing 3-D objects (sphere, cube, cylinder, cone) by how they look and move, and choosing blocks to build with. At home, build a tower and talk about which block goes where and why.

Alabama Course of Study content standard: K.18; K.21 · describing objects around us with the names of shapes and comparing solid shapes

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. A ball is round and rolls everywhere.
  2. A box has flat faces and corners. It stacks well.
  3. A can has flat ends and rolls on its side.

Example: Which object can stack tall, like blocks? A ball rolls away. A box has flat faces, so it stacks. Answer: A box
