Numbers to 20
Count, read and compare numbers
What your child practices
Counting to 20 forward and back from any number, recognizing small groups at a glance, and comparing two numbers.
Alabama Course of Study content standard: K.2; K.3; K.5 · counting on from a given number and matching up to 20 objects with a written number
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Count each thing once. Do not skip any.
- To count on, say the next number: 14, then 15.
- Counting back goes the other way: 15, 14, 13.
Example: What is 1 more than 14? Count on from 14. The next number is 15. Answer: 15
