Kindergarten · Math · Unit 4 of 11
More, Less, Same
Compare groups and balance
What your child practices
Comparing groups by matching them one to one, seeing equal as balanced and unequal as unbalanced on a scale, and reading simple picture graphs.
Alabama Course of Study content standard: K.6; K.7 · telling whether one group has more, fewer or the same as another, and comparing numbers to 10
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Match things one to one.
- The group with extras has more.
- If none are left over, the groups are the same.
Example: There are 5 cats and 3 dogs. Which group has more? Match each dog to a cat. 2 cats have no match. Answer: The cats
More, Less, Same in Alabama
In the Alabama Course of Study, this is unit 4 of 11 in Kindergarten Math, after Add & Take Away and before Shapes & Sizes.
Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
