My Community

Places, helpers and good choices

What your child practices

Community helpers and places, plus rights, rules, roles and responsibilities at home, at school and in the community.

Alaska content standards learning standard: SS.1.2.6.1; SS.1.1.14.1 · roles at home, at school and in the community, and trading for what a place doesn't have

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. A community is where people live, work and play.
  2. Helpers do jobs: a vet helps pets, a farmer grows food.
  3. Rules help us stay safe and be fair.

Example: Who helps sick pets get better? Pets go to an animal doctor. An animal doctor is called a vet. Answer: vet

My Community in Alaska

In the Alaska content standards, this is unit 3 of 8 in 1st grade Social Studies, after Our Land and before Changes in My Life.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
