Rhyme Time

Words that sound alike

What your child practices

Hearing rhymes and spotting word families (-at, -ig, -op). Both help with reading and spelling new words.

Alaska content standards learning standard: RF.2.3 · rhymes and word families

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Rhyming words end with the same sound: goat and coat.
  2. A word family shares the same ending: mop, top, hop are in the -op family.
  3. Listen to the sound, not the spelling: tie and fly rhyme.

Example: Which word rhymes with “bone”? phone or bun? “bone” ends with the “-one” sound. “phone” ends with the same sound. Answer: phone

Rhyme Time in Alaska

In the Alaska content standards, this is unit 1 of 12 in 2nd grade English Language Arts, before Sound Detectives.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
