How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Read the key: one picture can stand for 2, 5 or 10.
  2. Multiply the pictures by the key.
  3. Subtract to compare two rows.

Example: Each 🌷 stands for 5. Spring has 4 🌷. How many chose spring? 4 × 5 = 20. Answer: 20

Scaled Graphs in Alaska

In the Alaska content standards, this is unit 14 of 14 in 3rd grade Math, after Halves & Fourths of an Inch.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
