Algebra Moves
Monomials and inequalities
What your child practices
Combining like terms such as 3x + 5x, evaluating expressions, and finding values that make an inequality true and showing them on a number line.
Alaska content standards learning standard: 6.EE.2; 6.EE.8 · evaluating expressions with letters for numbers and writing inequalities of the form x > c or x < c
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- A variable is a letter that stands for a number.
- Add like terms: 3n + 2n = 5n.
- To evaluate, replace the letter with its number, then use the order of operations.
Example: Evaluate 2n + 3 when n = 4. Replace n with 4: 2 × 4 + 3. Multiply first: 8. Then add: 8 + 3 = 11. Answer: 11
Algebra Moves in Alaska
In the Alaska content standards, this is unit 10 of 17 in 6th grade Math, after Integers & Decimals and before Data & Graphs.
Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.

Sample questions
A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.
Question 1
Which value of n makes 3n + 8 < 38 true?
3n + 8 < 38
- 10
- 7
- 12
7
Hint: Try each choice in the inequality.
Question 2
What is 3n + 3n?
3n + 3n
- 6
- 9n
- 6n
6n
Hint: Add the numbers in front. The letter stays the same, like adding apples to apples.
Question 3
Which shows the solution to n > 6 on a number line?
- an open circle at 6 with an arrow pointing right
- a closed circle at 6 with an arrow pointing right
- an open circle at 6 with an arrow pointing left
an open circle at 6 with an arrow pointing right
Hint: An open circle means the number itself is not included. The arrow points to the numbers that work.
Question 4
Evaluate 2n + 9 when n = 2.7.
2n + 9, n = 2.7
answer box
14.4
Hint: Put 2.7 in for n. Multiply first, then add.
Question 5
What is 8a + 5a?
8a + 5a
- 13a
- 40a
- 13
13a
Hint: Add the numbers in front. The letter stays the same, like adding apples to apples.
Question 6
What is 8x + x?
8x + x
- 8x²
- 9x
- 9
9x
Hint: x means 1x. So add 8 + 1.
