Expressions

Build, compare and match

What your child practices

Writing an expression for a pattern or a sentence, deciding which expressions are equivalent, expanding brackets, and collecting like terms.

Alaska content standards learning standard: A-SSE.1 · building and interpreting expressions in context

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. An expression uses letters and numbers: 3n + 2.
  2. Equivalent expressions have the same value for every number.
  3. Expand with the distributive property: 2(x + 3) = 2x + 6.

Example: Expand 3(x + 4). 3 × x = 3x. 3 × 4 = 12. Answer: 3x + 12
