Rearranging Formulas
Solve for any letter
What your child practices
Rearranging a formula to solve for one quantity (d = rt for t, P = 2l + 2w for l) and using it, plus justifying each step in solving an equation.
Alaska content standards learning standard: A-CED.4; A-REI.1 · rearranging formulas and equations to highlight a quantity
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Treat the other letters like numbers.
- Undo each operation on the letter you want, in reverse order.
- Do the same thing to both sides.
Example: Solve d = rt for t. t is multiplied by r. Divide both sides by r. Answer: t = d/r
Rearranging Formulas in Alaska
In the Alaska content standards, this is unit 15 of 17 in 9th grade Math, after Factoring & Quadratics and before Two-Way Tables & Causation.
Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.

Sample questions
A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.
Question 1
To solve 8x + 10 = 42, Maya first subtracts 10 from both sides. What equation comes next?
- x + 10 = 42
- 8x = 42
- 8x = 32
- 8x = 52
8x = 32
Hint: Whatever you do to one side, do to the other. Subtracting keeps the equation balanced.
Question 2
Solve C = 2πr for r.
- r = C − 2π
- r = 2πC
- r = 2π/C
- r = C/(2π)
r = C/(2π)
Hint: Undo what is being done to r, one step at a time, doing the same to both sides.
Question 3
Use P = 2l + 2w. A rectangle has perimeter 30 ft and width 9 ft. What is its length?
- 15 ft
- 6 ft
- 12 ft
- 21 ft
6 ft
Hint: l = (P − 2w)/2 = (30 − 18) ÷ 2.
Question 4
To solve 3x + 9 = 36, Amir first subtracts 9 from both sides. What equation comes next?
- 3x = 36
- x + 9 = 13
- 3x = 27
- 3x = 45
3x = 27
Hint: Whatever you do to one side, do to the other. Subtracting keeps the equation balanced.
Question 5
Use d = rt. A car travels 300 miles at 60 miles per hour. How many hours does it take?
- 18000 h
- 6 h
- 5 h
- 55 h
5 h
Hint: t = d/r = 300 ÷ 60.
Question 6
Solve d = rt for t.
- t = d/r
- t = r/d
- t = dr
- t = d − r
t = d/r
Hint: Undo what is being done to t, one step at a time, doing the same to both sides.
