Algebra Moves

Monomials and inequalities

What your child practices

Combining like terms such as 3x + 5x, evaluating expressions, and finding values that make an inequality true and showing them on a number line.

Arizona Academic Standards learning standard: 6.EE.A.1; 6.EE.B.8 · evaluating expressions with letters for numbers and writing inequalities of the form x > c or x < c

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. A variable is a letter that stands for a number.
  2. Add like terms: 3n + 2n = 5n.
  3. To evaluate, replace the letter with its number, then use the order of operations.

Example: Evaluate 2n + 3 when n = 4. Replace n with 4: 2 × 4 + 3. Multiply first: 8. Then add: 8 + 3 = 11. Answer: 11
