Algebra Moves

Like terms and inequalities

What your child practices

Combining like terms, evaluating expressions with decimals, solving two-step equations, and finding and graphing solutions to inequalities.

Arizona Academic Standards learning standard: 7.EE.A.1; 7.EE.B.4 · writing equivalent expressions and solving equations and inequalities

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Combine like terms: 5x + 2x = 7x.
  2. Do the same operation to both sides to keep an equation balanced.
  3. To check, put your answer back into the equation.

Example: Solve 3x + 4 = 19. Subtract 4 from both sides: 3x = 15. Divide both sides by 3: x = 5. Answer: x = 5
