Graphs

Read picture graphs

What your child practices

Reading picture graphs: how many, which has the most or fewest, and how many more.

California Content Standards learning standard: 2.MD.10 · reading picture graphs and bar graphs with a single-unit scale

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Read the title and labels first.
  2. Count the pictures or read the bar for each kind.
  3. To compare, subtract: bigger count minus smaller.

Example: 5 chose apples and 3 chose pears. How many more chose apples? Apples: 5. Pears: 3. 5 − 3 = 2. Answer: 2 more
