Angles & Area
Acute, right, obtuse and area
What your child practices
Sorting angles into acute, right, obtuse and straight, finding area by multiplying length by width, and working backward to find a side.
Maine Learning Results learning standard: 4.MD.C.5; 4.G.A.1; 4.MD.A.3 · lines and angles, acute, right and obtuse angles, and the area formula for rectangles
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Area is the space inside. Length × width for a rectangle.
- A right angle is a square corner (90°). Acute is smaller. Obtuse is bigger.
- Area is measured in square units, like cm².
Example: A rectangle is 4 cm long and 3 cm wide. What is its area? Multiply length by width. 4 × 3 = 12. Answer: 12 square cm

Question 1
A rectangle is 5 cm long and 4 cm wide. What is its area in square centimeters?
answer box
20
Hint: Area = length × width.
Question 2
What kind of angle is this?
- straight
- obtuse
- right
- acute
straight
Hint: Acute is smaller than a square corner. Right is a square corner. Obtuse is bigger but not flat. Straight is flat.
Question 3
What kind of angle is this?
- acute
- straight
- obtuse
- right
obtuse
Hint: Acute is smaller than a square corner. Right is a square corner. Obtuse is bigger but not flat. Straight is flat.
Question 4
A rectangle has an area of 18 square centimeters. It is 6 cm long. How wide is it, in centimeters?
6 × = 18
answer box
3
Hint: Divide the area by the length to find the width.
Question 5
Each square is 1 square unit. What is the area of the rectangle?

Hint: Count the rows, and the squares in each row. Multiply them.
Question 6
What kind of angle is this?
- right
- acute
- obtuse
- straight
acute
Hint: Acute is smaller than a square corner. Right is a square corner. Obtuse is bigger but not flat. Straight is flat.
