Numbers to a Million
Read, write and compare big numbers
What your child practices
Place value to 1,000,000: digit values, standard and expanded form, number words, rounding, ordering, and using benchmarks like 500,000 on a number line.
Maine Learning Results learning standard: 5.NBT.A.1 · place value in multi-digit numbers
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Each place is worth 10 times the place to its right.
- Read big numbers in groups of three digits: thousands, then ones.
- To compare, start at the left-most place and look for the first difference.
Example: Write four hundred twelve thousand, three hundred five in digits. Thousands group: 412. Ones group: 305. Put them together: 412,305. Answer: 412,305

A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.
Question 1
What number is 600,000 + 10,000 + 6000 + 900 + 5?
answer box
616905
Hint: Each part fills one place value. Write the digits from the greatest place to the ones, and put a 0 in any place that is missing.
Question 2
What number belongs in the box on the number line?
answer box
100000
Hint: The line is split into 10 equal jumps from 0 to 1,000 000, so each jump is 100,000. Count the jumps to the box.
Question 3
Put these numbers in order from least to greatest.
- 748,981
- 479,881
- 478,891
- 478,981
478,891 → 478,981 → 479,881 → 748,981
Hint: Compare the greatest place first. If those digits match, move one place to the right, and keep going until the digits are different.
Question 4
Which number is closest to 250,000?
- 326,700
- 254,800
- 25,480
- 168,100
254,800
Hint: Find how far each number is from the benchmark. Check the number of digits too: a number with fewer digits is much smaller.
Question 5
In 916 342, what is the value of the digit 6?
- 600
- 6000
- 6
- 60,000
6000
Hint: Name the place of the 6, counting from the right: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands. The digit is worth 6 of that place.
Question 6
Round 598,511 to the nearest ten thousand.
- 580,000
- 590,000
- 600,000
- 599,000
600,000
Hint: Look at the digit just to the right of the ten thousands place. If it is 5 or more, round up; if it is less than 5, round down. Then every place to the right becomes 0.
