Inches to feet, grams to kilograms

What your child practices

Converting between units in the US customary and metric systems (both ways, including decimals) and using conversions in multi-step problems.

Maine Learning Results learning standard: 5.MD.A.1 · converting between different-sized units within one measurement system and using conversions in multi-step problems

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Big unit to small unit: multiply. Small unit to big unit: divide.
  2. Know the facts: 12 in = 1 ft, 16 oz = 1 lb, 4 qt = 1 gal, 100 cm = 1 m, 1000 g = 1 kg.
  3. Change to the same unit before you add or subtract.

Example: A rope is 4 yards long. How many feet is that? 1 yard = 3 feet. 4 × 3 = 12. Answer: 12 feet
