Algebra Moves
Like terms and inequalities
What your child practices
Combining like terms, evaluating expressions with decimals, solving two-step equations, and finding and graphing solutions to inequalities.
Maine Learning Results learning standard: 7.EE.A.1; 7.EE.B.4 · writing equivalent expressions and solving equations and inequalities
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Combine like terms: 5x + 2x = 7x.
- Do the same operation to both sides to keep an equation balanced.
- To check, put your answer back into the equation.
Example: Solve 3x + 4 = 19. Subtract 4 from both sides: 3x = 15. Divide both sides by 3: x = 5. Answer: x = 5

Question 1
Solve for x.
8x + 9 = 25
answer box
2
Hint: Undo the adding first, then undo the multiplying.
Question 2
Which shows the solution to n > 9 on a number line?
- a closed circle at 9 with an arrow pointing right
- an open circle at 9 with an arrow pointing right
- an open circle at 9 with an arrow pointing left
an open circle at 9 with an arrow pointing right
Hint: An open circle leaves out the number. A closed circle includes it. The arrow points the way the solutions go.
Question 3
Solve for x.
5x − 19 = 21
answer box
8
Hint: Undo the subtracting first, then undo the multiplying.
Question 4
Solve for x.
8x + 6 = 22
