People on the Move
Migration, immigration and fair treatment
What your child practices
Practices why people migrate (push and pull factors), immigrants and refugees, how governments respond to immigration, the harm done by stereotypes, colonization and discrimination, and how communities welcome newcomers.
Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards benchmark: 4.5.23.1; 4.5.23.2; 4.5.25.1 · migration and immigration and government responses, stereotypes, and the processes and impacts of colonization
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- People migrate because of push factors (like war) and pull factors (like jobs).
- A refugee had to leave their country to be safe.
- Stereotypes and discrimination hurt people. Communities can help newcomers, like offering interpreters.
Example: What is a refugee? Refugees did not choose to leave for fun. They left because they were in danger. Answer: a person who had to leave their country to be safe
