Join and take away

What your child practices

Small story problems where some join or some leave (totals to 10), plus finding one more and one less.

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Adding puts groups together.
  2. Taking away means some go away.
  3. Count what is left or what you have in all.

Example: 3 birds sit on a branch. 2 more fly in. How many now? Start with 3. Count on 2 more: 4, 5. Answer: 5 birds

In the Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards, this is unit 3 of 11 in Kindergarten Math, after Make 5 and 10 and before More, Less, Same.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
