Fill frames to 5 and 10

What your child practices

Using 5 and 10 as anchors (fingers, five and ten frames), finding how many more make 5 or 10, and breaking numbers into two parts.

Minnesota K-12 Academic Standards benchmark: 0.3.5.7 · breaking numbers up to 10 into pairs in more than one way

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. A ten frame has 10 boxes.
  2. Fill boxes to show a number.
  3. The empty boxes show what is missing.

Example: Show 7 on a ten frame. How many more make 10? Fill 7 boxes. 3 boxes are empty. Answer: 3

Make 5 and 10 in Minnesota
