Parents & Babies

How parents help their young, and how babies look like them.

What your child practices

Practices how animal parents feed, protect and teach their young, and how young plants and animals are like, but not exactly like, their parents.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: 1-LS1-2; 1-LS3-1 · parents and offspring behave in ways that help offspring survive, and young are like their parents

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Animal parents feed, protect and teach their young.
  2. Babies look like their parents, but not exactly.
  3. A baby kangaroo stays safe in its mother's pouch.

Example: A baby bird chirps with its mouth open. Why? Baby birds can't find food yet. They call so a parent feeds them. Answer: to get food
