Units
Unit 1
Numbers to 20
Counting, ordering and comparing numbers to 20, and seeing teen numbers as 1 ten and some ones.
Learning standard: NY-1.NBT.1 · counting, reading and writing numbers, and writing a number for a group of objects
Unit 2
Make 10
Finding pairs that make 10 (like 6 + 4) with ten frames, fingers and stories. Making 10 is a key strategy for adding.
Learning standard: NY-1.OA.3; NY-1.OA.6a · using properties of operations and making ten to add within 20
Unit 3
Adding
Adding to 20 with pictures, ten frames, number lines and short stories, using strategies like counting on, doubles and making 10.
Learning standard: NY-1.OA.1; NY-1.OA.6 · solving addition word problems and adding within 20
Unit 4
Take Away
Subtracting within 20 by counting back and thinking addition, and solving short take-away and compare stories.
Learning standard: NY-1.OA.1; NY-1.OA.4; NY-1.OA.8 · solving subtraction problems, subtraction as an unknown-addend problem, and finding the unknown number
Unit 5
Equal or Not
Learning that = means "the same amount as" (not just "the answer is"), and using ≠ when two sides are different.
Learning standard: NY-1.OA.7 · using the meaning of the equal sign to decide whether an equation is true or false
Unit 6
Measuring
Measuring length with paper clips and cubes, comparing longer and shorter, heavier and lighter, and seeing why same-size units matter.
Learning standard: NY-1.MD.1; NY-1.MD.2 · ordering and comparing lengths and measuring with same-size units
Unit 7
Shapes
Naming and comparing 2D shapes by their sides and corners, and 3D objects by their faces and whether they roll or stack.
Learning standard: NY-1.G.1; NY-1.G.2 · defining attributes of shapes and putting shapes together to make new shapes
Unit 8
Data & Graphs
Sorting by one attribute, reading picture graphs and bar graphs, and comparing groups.
Learning standard: NY-1.MD.4 · organizing and reading data with up to three categories
Unit 9
Numbers to 100
Reading and building numbers to 100 with tens and ones, comparing them, and seeing that two names can mean the same amount.
Learning standard: NY-1.NBT.1; NY-1.NBT.2; NY-1.NBT.3 · counting to 120, tens and ones, and comparing two-digit numbers with >, = and <
Unit 10
Count It Up
Counting forward within 100, back from 20, by 2s to 20, and by 5s and 10s to 100, plus seeing small amounts at a glance (subitizing).
Learning standard: NY-1.NBT.1; NY-1.OA.5 · counting on and back from any number and relating counting to adding and subtracting
Unit 11
One Half
One half means 1 of 2 equal parts. Children share items fairly between two people and see that two halves make a whole.
Learning standard: NY-1.G.3 · splitting circles and rectangles into equal shares and naming halves
Unit 12
Hour & Half Hour
Telling time to the hour and half hour on clocks with hands and on digital clocks.
Learning standard: NY-1.MD.3a · telling and writing time in hours and half hours on analog and digital clocks
Unit 13
Jump by Tens
Finding 10 more and 10 less than a number in their head, subtracting tens, and adding ones or tens to a two-digit number.
Learning standard: NY-1.NBT.4; NY-1.NBT.5; NY-1.NBT.6 · finding 10 more and 10 less, subtracting multiples of 10, and adding within 100
Unit 14
Picture Graphs
Reading picture graphs with three groups: how many in each, how many more, how many in all, and which question a class survey can answer.
Learning standard: NY-1.MD.4 · organizing, showing and reading data with up to three categories, and how many more or fewer
Unit 15
Add Three Numbers
Word problems that add three numbers with a total up to 20. Children add two numbers first, often two that make 10, then add the third.
Learning standard: NY-1.OA.2 · solving word problems that add three whole numbers with a sum up to 20
