Trade Around the World

Resources, money and trade

What your child practices

Natural and human resources, the three economic questions, surplus and scarcity, how communities earn a living, money in other countries, and how ships, planes and the internet help communities trade.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: 3.9a; 3.9b; 3.10a; 3.10b · how world communities use resources, earn a living, produce goods and services, and trade with each other

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Natural resources come from nature. Human resources are the people who do the work.
  2. Scarcity means not enough. A surplus means extra, which can be traded.
  3. Ships, planes and the internet help communities trade.

Example: A town grows more apples than it can eat. What does it have? It has extra apples. Extra is called a surplus. Answer: a surplus
