Communities Around the World
How people live in world communities
What your child practices
Communities in countries such as Japan, Brazil, Kenya, Egypt, India, Mexico and Peru: where people settle and why, how they adapt to and change their environment, languages, festivals, folktales and families.
New York State Learning Standards learning standard: 3.3a; 3.3b; 3.4a; 3.4b; 3.5a; 3.5b · where world communities settle, how they adapt to and change their environment, and their stories, arts, languages and celebrations
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- People settle where there is water, good land and work.
- They adapt to their environment, like stilt houses in flood areas or terraces on hills.
- Communities have their own languages, festivals and folktales.
Example: Why do some farmers cut steps into hillsides? Crops like rice need flat land and water. Steps make flat strips on a slope. Answer: to make flat land for crops
