Multiply
Multiply up to three digits
What your child practices
Multiplying 2- and 3-digit numbers using area models and partial products, patterns with 10, 100 and 1000, doubling and halving, and estimating products by rounding.
New York State Learning Standards learning standard: NY-5.NBT.5 · fluently multiplying multi-digit whole numbers
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Break the bigger number into place values.
- Multiply each part, then add the parts together.
- Estimate by rounding to check your answer makes sense.
Example: 23 × 14 = ? 23 × 10 = 230. 23 × 4 = 92. 230 + 92 = 322. Answer: 322

Question 1
Which has the same product as 25 × 8?
- 50 × 4
- 50 × 16
- 25 × 4
- 50 × 8
50 × 4
Hint: Doubling one factor and halving the other keeps the product the same. Check that only one factor was doubled and the other was halved.
Question 2
A club buys 28 plants for $21 each and a bag of soil for $40. How many dollars do they spend in all?
answer box
628
Hint: Step 1: multiply to find the cost of all the items. Step 2: add the extra cost.
Question 3
Multiply.
73 × 29 = ?
answer box
2117
Hint: Split 73 into place-value parts (70 + 3). Multiply each part by 29, then add the partial products.
Question 4
Use the area model. What is 74 × 35?
Area model for 74 × 35 × 70 4 30 2100 120 5 350 20 answer box
2590
Hint: Each box holds a partial product. Add all the partial products inside the model to get the total.
Question 5
A bakery packs 23 muffins in each box. How many muffins are in 96 boxes?
answer boxmuffins
2208 muffins
Hint: Equal groups mean multiply. Split one factor into place-value parts, multiply each part, then add.
Question 6
Which product is the greatest?
- 58 × 22
- 34 × 12
- 21 × 19
- 28 × 15
58 × 22
Hint: Estimate each product with friendly numbers. If two estimates are close, work those out exactly.
