Numbers to a Million
Read, write and compare big numbers
What your child practices
Place value to 1,000,000: digit values, standard and expanded form, number words, rounding, ordering, and using benchmarks like 500,000 on a number line.
New York State Learning Standards learning standard: NY-5.NBT.1 · place value in multi-digit numbers
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Each place is worth 10 times the place to its right.
- Read big numbers in groups of three digits: thousands, then ones.
- To compare, start at the left-most place and look for the first difference.
Example: Write four hundred twelve thousand, three hundred five in digits. Thousands group: 412. Ones group: 305. Put them together: 412,305. Answer: 412,305

Sample questions
A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.
Question 1
Put these numbers in order from least to greatest.
- 449,568
- 446,958
- 494,658
- 449,658
446,958 → 449,568 → 449,658 → 494,658
Hint: Compare the greatest place first. If those digits match, move one place to the right, and keep going until the digits are different.
Question 2
What number is 10,000 more than 299,629?
answer box
309629
Hint: Only the ten thousands digit should change by 1. If that digit is 9, regroup with the place to its left.
Question 3
In 613 686, what is the value of the digit 1?
- 100
- 1000
- 1
- 10,000
10,000
Hint: Name the place of the 1, counting from the right: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands. The digit is worth 1 of that place.
Question 4
Which number is closest to 500,000?
- 50,130
- 413,100
- 501,300
- 546,500
501,300
Hint: Find how far each number is from the benchmark. Check the number of digits too: a number with fewer digits is much smaller.
Question 5
Round 595,090 to the nearest ten thousand.
- 595,000
- 580,000
- 590,000
- 600,000
600,000
Hint: Look at the digit just to the right of the ten thousands place. If it is 5 or more, round up; if it is less than 5, round down. Then every place to the right becomes 0.
Question 6
What number belongs in the box on the number line?
answer box
200000
Hint: The line is split into 10 equal jumps from 0 to 1,000 000, so each jump is 100,000. Count the jumps to the box.
