Line Plots with Fractions
Halves, quarters and eighths
What your child practices
Reading line plots of measurements in halves, quarters and eighths, and using fraction addition, subtraction and multiplication to answer questions about the data.
New York State Learning Standards learning standard: NY-5.MD.2 · making and reading line plots of measurements in fractions of a unit and solving problems with the data
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- A line plot puts an X above the value of each measurement.
- To total the X marks at one value, multiply: 3 marks at 1/4 is 3 × 1/4 = 3/4.
- Add the totals for every value to get the total of all the measurements.
Example: A line plot shows 2 X marks at 1/2 inch and 3 X marks at 3/4 inch. What is the total length? 2 × 1/2 = 1. 3 × 3/4 = 9/4 = 2 1/4. 1 + 2 1/4 = 3 1/4. Answer: 3 1/4 inches

Question 1
What is the difference between the greatest and the least measurement?
Ribbon pieces (inches) Measurement (inches) X marks 1/8 X X 1/4 X X X 3/4 X X X X 7/8 X X X X 1 1/2 X X X X - 1 1/2 inches
- 1 5/8 inches
- 1 3/8 inches
- 11/16 inch
1 3/8 inches
Hint: The greatest is 1 1/2 and the least is 1/8. Subtract.
Question 2
What is the total weight of the bags at 5/8 pound?
Bags of trail mix (pounds) Measurement (pounds) X marks 1/4 X X X 5/8 X X X X 3/4 X X X X 1 X X 1 1/4 X X - 5/16 pound
- 2 1/2 pounds
- 1 1/8 pounds
- 5/8 pound
2 1/2 pounds
Hint: There are 4 X marks at 5/8. Multiply: 4 × 5/8.
Question 3
Three X marks are at 1/2 inch. What length do they make together?
- 1 1/2 inches
- 1/6 inch
- 1/2 inch
- 3 1/2 inches
1 1/2 inches
Hint: 3 × 1/2 = 3/2 = 1 1/2.
Question 4
Each X is one of the ribbon pieces. How many ribbon pieces are there?
Ribbon pieces (inches) Measurement (inches) X marks 1/2 X X 5/8 X X X X 7/8 X X 1 X 1 1/4 X - 5
- 10
- 12
- 11
10
Hint: Count every X mark.
Question 5
How many days measured more than 1/2 inch?
Rain each day (inches) Measurement (inches) X marks 1/8 X X X X 1/4 X 5/8 X X 7/8 X X X X 1 X X X X - 7
- 3
- 10
- 11
10
Hint: 1/2 is 4/8. Add the X marks for every value greater than 4/8.
Question 6
All the measurements are put together. What is the total weight?
Bags of trail mix (pounds) Measurement (pounds) X marks 1/4 X X 1/2 X X X X 3/4 X X X X 1 X X X X - 10 1/2 pounds
- 9 pounds
- 9 1/2 pounds
- 2 1/2 pounds
9 1/2 pounds
Hint: Multiply each value by its number of X marks, then add all the results.
