All About Me

Feelings, kindness and being me

What your child practices

Naming feelings, noticing how we are the same and different, and choosing kind actions so everyone feels respected.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: K.1a; K.2a · what makes each child unique and what they share with family, school and community members

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Feelings have names: happy, sad, scared, angry.
  2. Think: what happened? How would you feel?
  3. Kind choices help others feel good.

Example: Your friend shares a toy with you. How might you feel? Sharing is a kind thing to do. Kind things make us feel good. Answer: happy

All About Me in New York

In the New York State Learning Standards, this is unit 1 of 12 in Kindergarten Social Studies, before I Am Me.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
