Places Near Me

Buildings, nature and what they are for

What your child practices

Naming places in the community (library, park, school, hospital), what they are used for, and whether they are natural or built.

New York State Learning Standards learning standard: K.6c · natural features and built places in the community

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Some places are nature: hills, lakes, meadows.
  2. Some places are built by people: stores, bridges, libraries.
  3. Each place has a job, like a store for food.

Example: Is a bridge nature or built? People made the bridge. Things people make are built. Answer: built

Places Near Me in New York

In the New York State Learning Standards, this is unit 7 of 12 in Kindergarten Social Studies, after My First Maps and before Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
