Smart guesses, and counting in equal groups.
What your child practises
Practises estimating a quantity to 20 using something known, such as ten, and making numbers up to 30 from equal groups of 2, 5 or 10, with or without singles.
Nunavut Curriculum approved guide: Alberta Mathematics K–9 (2007), Number · estimating quantities to 20 with referents, and numbers up to 30 as equal groups with and without singles
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practise.
- An estimate is a good guess, not an exact count.
- Compare to a group you know, like 10.
- Pick the guess that is closest.
Example: About how many beans are in a jar that holds 20? A group of 10 is easy to see. The jar looks like 2 groups of 10. Answer: About 20
