Multiply & Divide
Bigger numbers by one digit
What your child practises
Multiplying and dividing 2- and 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers by splitting them by place value, plus remainders, estimating and word problems.
Saskatchewan Curriculum outcome: N4.4, N4.5 · multiplying 2- and 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers, and dividing
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practise.
- Break the bigger number into tens and ones.
- Multiply each part.
- Add the parts back together.
Example: 3 × 24 = ? 24 is 20 + 4. 3 × 20 = 60 and 3 × 4 = 12. 60 + 12 = 72. Answer: 72
Sample questions
A taste of this unit. In the app, questions change every time and get easier or harder to match your child.
Question 1
What is 800 × 3?
800 × 3 = ?
- 24 000
- 240
- 3200
- 2400
Show answer
2400
Hint: 8 × 3 = 24. So 8 hundreds × 3 = 24 hundreds, which is 2400.
Question 2
Each section of a stadium has 68 seats. How many seats are in 7 sections?
🏟️answer box
Show answer
476
Hint: 7 groups of 68 is 68 × 7. Split 68 into 60 + 8. Multiply each part by 7: 60 × 7 = 420, 8 × 7 = 56. Then add the parts.
Question 3
68 paintbrushes are shared equally by 4 tables. How many paintbrushes does each table get?
🎨answer box
Show answer
17
Hint: Divide 68 by 4. Split 68 into 40 + 28 and divide each part by 4.
Question 4
What is 96 ÷ 6?
96 ÷ 6 = ?
answer box
Show answer
16
Hint: Split 96 into parts that are easy to share by 6: 60 + 36. 60 ÷ 6 = 10 and 36 ÷ 6 = 6. Add the two answers.
Question 5
What is 16 × 4?
16 × 4 = ?
answer box
Show answer
64
Hint: Split 16 into 10 + 6. Multiply each part by 4: 10 × 4 = 40, 6 × 4 = 24. Then add the parts.
Question 6
What is 318 × 4?
318 × 4 = ?
answer box
Show answer
1272
Hint: Split 318 into 300 + 10 + 8. Multiply each part by 4: 300 × 4 = 1200, 10 × 4 = 40, 8 × 4 = 32. Then add the parts.
