Prefixes & Suffixes

un-, re-, dis-, -ly, -er, -est and -ion.

What your child practices

Your child works out what un-, re-, dis-, -ly, -er, -est and -ion add to a word, and uses -er and -est to compare.

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) teks student expectation: 2.3(C); 2.2(B) · the prefixes un-, re- and dis- and the suffixes -ly, -er, -est and -ion

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. A prefix goes at the start: un- means not, re- means again, dis- means the opposite.
  2. A suffix goes at the end: -ly means in a way, -er means more, -est means the most.
  3. Find the base word first, then add the meaning of the part.

Example: What does “unhappy” mean? The base word is happy. un- means not. Answer: not happy
