How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821.
  2. Mexico invited settlers to build up Texas. Empresarios like Stephen F. Austin brought them and earned land.
  3. Moses Austin got the first permission but died before he could start.

Example: What was an empresario? Mexico gave land to people who brought settlers. That person was an empresario. Answer: a person who brought settlers to Texas in exchange for land

Mexican Texas in Texas

In the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), this is unit 3 of 14 in 4th grade Social Studies, after Explorers & Missions and before The Texas Revolution.

Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
