How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Culture is a group's shared way of life: language, beliefs and customs.
- Institutions like schools, families and religions shape society.
- History spreads culture: Spanish and Portuguese in Latin America come from colonization. A multicultural society has many cultures.
Example: Why do many people in Latin America speak Spanish or Portuguese? Look at history. Spain and Portugal colonized the region. Answer: because of colonization by Spain and Portugal
Cultures & Beliefs in Texas
In the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), this is unit 5 of 9 in 6th grade Social Studies, after Governments & Citizens and before Science, Technology & Change.
Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.
