Our flags, our pledges and voting

What your child practices

The United States flag and the Texas Lone Star flag, the Pledge of Allegiance and the Pledge to the Texas Flag, and voting as a fair way for a group to decide.

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) teks student expectation: K.9(A); K.9(B); K.9(C) · the United States and Texas flags, the two pledges, and voting to decide as a group

How we explain it

Children can open this short lesson before they practice.

  1. A flag is a symbol for a place.
  2. The United States flag has 50 stars.
  3. We say pledges to show respect. When we vote, each person gets one vote.

Example: How many stars are on the United States flag? There is one star for each state. There are 50 states. Answer: 50
