Grade 5 Add & Subtract worksheet
from Gradelings · Name: ______________________
How to explain it
- Line up the digits by place value.
- Add or subtract from the ones place and move left, regrouping when you need to.
- Estimate first by rounding, then check your answer is close.
Example: 48 000 + 27 500 = ? Estimate: 50 000 + 30 000 = 80 000. Add 48 000 + 27 500 = 75 500. 75 500 is close to the estimate. Answer: 75 500
Question 1
A community wants to plant 75 000 trees. Volunteers planted 28 687 in the spring and 18 703 in the fall. How many more trees do they need to plant?
- 56 297
- 46 313
- 27 610
- 28 610
27 610
Hint: This takes two steps. First add the two amounts collected. Then subtract that total from the goal.
Question 2
A stadium has 324 926 seats. So far, 76 933 tickets have been sold. How many seats are still available?
answer box
247993
Hint: Finding a difference or how many more means subtract the smaller amount from the greater one. You can also count up from the smaller number.
Question 3
Add: 221 289 + 47 590
Line up the places HTh TTh Th H T O 2 2 1 2 8 9 + 4 7 5 9 0 answer box
268879
Hint: Start with the ones and work left. When a place adds to 10 or more, regroup 10 of that place as 1 of the next place.
Question 4
Round each number to the nearest ten thousand, then subtract. What is the estimate for 584 677 − 200 705?
- 390 000
- 380 000
- 370 000
- 3 800 000
380 000
Hint: Round each number first: look at the digit to the right of the ten thousands place. Then subtract the rounded numbers.
Question 5
What do you add to 76 500 to make 100 000?
76 500 + = 100 000
answer box
23500
Hint: Count up in friendly jumps: first to the next round number, then on to 100 000. Add up all your jumps.
Question 6
Use mental math. What is the answer?
55 651 − 3001 = ?
- 52 651
- 51 650
- 52 650
- 52 652
52 650
Hint: 3001 is 1 more than 3000. Subtract 3000 first, then adjust by 1. Think about which way to adjust!
Question 7
Subtract: 729 213 − 62 292
Line up the places HTh TTh Th H T O 7 2 9 2 1 3 − 6 2 2 9 2 answer box
666921
Hint: Start with the ones. When the top digit is too small, regroup 1 from the next place (across zeros if needed). Check by adding your answer to 62 292.
Question 8
A city has 395 319 adults and 60 931 children. How many people live in the city?
answer box
456250
Hint: The total of two amounts means add. Line up the places and add from the ones, regrouping as you go.
Question 9
A plane flew 64 421 km this year and 58 228 km last year. How many more kilometres did it fly this year?
answer box
6193
Hint: Finding a difference or how many more means subtract the smaller amount from the greater one. You can also count up from the smaller number.
Question 10
A charity run hopes to raise $20 000. It raised $3419 online and $7025 on the day of the run. How many more dollars does it need?
- 16 581
- 10 444
- 12 975
- 9556
9556
Hint: This takes two steps. First add the two amounts collected. Then subtract that total from the goal.
