Grade 5 Numbers to a Million worksheet
from Gradelings · Name: ______________________
How to explain it
- Each place is worth 10 times the place to its right.
- Read big numbers in groups of three digits: thousands, then ones.
- To compare, start at the left-most place and look for the first difference.
Example: Write four hundred twelve thousand, three hundred five in digits. Thousands group: 412. Ones group: 305. Put them together: 412 305. Answer: 412 305
Question 1
Write this number using digits: four hundred fifty-seven thousand one hundred sixty-nine.
answer box
457169
Hint: Split the number at the word “thousand”. Write the thousands part, then the last three digits. Use a 0 to hold any empty place.
Question 2
Put these numbers in order from least to greatest.
- 323 884
- 328 348
- 328 384
- 328 834
323 884 → 328 348 → 328 384 → 328 834
Hint: Compare the greatest place first. If those digits match, move one place to the right, and keep going until the digits are different.
Question 3
Round 467 126 to the nearest ten thousand.
- 460 000
- 467 000
- 500 000
- 470 000
470 000
Hint: Look at the digit just to the right of the ten thousands place. If it is 5 or more, round up; if it is less than 5, round down. Then every place to the right becomes 0.
Question 4
In 966 611, what is the value of the digit 9?
- 9
- 900 000
- 90 000
- 9000
900 000
Hint: Name the place of the 9, counting from the right: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands. The digit is worth 9 of that place.
Question 5
What number is 400 000 + 4000 + 900 + 1?
answer box
404901
Hint: Each part fills one place value. Write the digits from the greatest place to the ones, and put a 0 in any place that is missing.
Question 6
Which number is closest to 500 000?
- 581 900
- 498 900
- 461 100
- 49 890
498 900
Hint: Find how far each number is from the benchmark. Check the number of digits too: a number with fewer digits is much smaller.
Question 7
What number is 10 000 less than 290 994?
answer box
280994
Hint: Only the ten thousands digit should change by 1. If that digit is 0, regroup with the place to its left.
Question 8
What number belongs in the box on the number line?
answer box
700000
Hint: The line is split into 10 equal jumps from 0 to 1 000 000, so each jump is 100 000. Count the jumps to the box.

In 46 348, what is the value of the digit 3?
- 3
- 30
- 3000
