Grade 5 Area & Perimeter worksheet
from Gradelings Β· Name: ______________________
How to explain it
- Perimeter is the distance around a shape: add all the sides.
- Area is the space inside: length Γ width for a rectangle.
- Perimeter is in units like cm. Area is in square units like cmΒ².
Example: A rectangle is 10 cm long and 4 cm wide. Find its perimeter and area. Perimeter: 10 + 4 + 10 + 4 = 28 cm. Area: 10 Γ 4 = 40 cmΒ². Answer: 28 cm and 40 cmΒ²
Question 1
How many square units cover this rectangle?

108 square units
Hint: Count the squares in one row, then multiply by the number of rows: area = rows Γ columns.
Question 2
These rectangles all have a perimeter of 32 m. Which one has the greatest area?
- 11 m by 5 m
- 8 m by 8 m
- 13 m by 3 m
- 10 m by 6 m
8 m by 8 m
Hint: Work out length Γ width for each one. For the same perimeter, the closer the shape is to a square, the greater the area.
Question 3
Rectangles A and B have the same perimeter. Which statement is true?
Rectangle Length Width A 17 cm 2 cm B 13 cm 6 cm - Rectangle A has the greater area.
- Rectangle B has the greater area.
- They have the same area.
Rectangle B has the greater area.
Hint: Find each area: length Γ width. Same perimeter does not mean same area!
Question 4
A rectangle has an area of 12 cmΒ². Its length is 6 cm. What is its width?
answer boxcm
2 cm
Hint: Area = length Γ width, so 6 Γ ? = 12. Divide the area by the length.
Question 5
A farmer is putting a fence around a rectangular field that is 19 m long and 6 m wide. How many metres of fence are needed?
answer boxm
50 m
Hint: Perimeter is the distance around: add all four sides, or work out 2 Γ (length + width).
Question 6
A square garden has sides of 13 m. What is its area?
answer boxmΒ²
169 mΒ²
Hint: Area of a square = side Γ side.
Question 7
A rectangular poster is 25 cm long and 5 cm wide. What is its area?
πΌοΈ25 cm Γ 5 cmanswer boxcmΒ²
125 cmΒ²
Hint: Area of a rectangle = length Γ width. The answer is in square units.
Question 8
Which unit is best for the area of a postage stamp?
- square metres (mΒ²)
- square centimetres (cmΒ²)
- centimetres (cm)
- litres (L)
square centimetres (cmΒ²)
Hint: Area is measured in square units. A stamp is small, so use a small square unit.
Question 9
A rectangular skating rink is 11 m long and 7 m wide. What is its area?
βΈοΈ11 m Γ 7 manswer boxmΒ²
77 mΒ²
Hint: Area of a rectangle = length Γ width. The answer is in square units.
Question 10
Rectangles A and B have the same area. Which statement is true?
Rectangle Length Width A 10 cm 2 cm B 20 cm 1 cm - Rectangle A has the greater perimeter.
- Rectangle B has the greater perimeter.
- They have the same perimeter.
Rectangle B has the greater perimeter.
Hint: Find each perimeter: 2 Γ (length + width). Same area does not mean same perimeter!
Answer key
- 1. 108 square units
- 2. 8 m by 8 m
- 3. Rectangle B has the greater area.
- 4. 2 cm
- 5. 50 m
- 6. 169 mΒ²
- 7. 125 cmΒ²
- 8. square centimetres (cmΒ²)
- 9. 77 mΒ²
- 10. Rectangle B has the greater perimeter.
