from Gradelings Β· Name: ______________________
How to explain it
- To change a mixed number to an improper fraction, multiply the whole by the bottom and add the top.
- A ratio compares two amounts, like 2 to 3.
- Equivalent ratios multiply or divide both parts by the same number.
Example: Write 2 3/4 as an improper fraction. 2 Γ 4 = 8. 8 + 3 = 11. Keep the bottom: 11/4. Answer: 11/4
Question 1
The table shows equivalent ratios. What number replaces the ?
Pancake recipe Cups of flour Eggs 5 6 10 12 15 18 30 ? answer box
36
Hint: Find what the known number in the last row was multiplied by, compared with the ratio 5:6. Multiply the other number by the same amount.
Question 2
Which mixed number is equal to 13/4?
- 3 1/4
- 4 1/4
- 1 3/4
- 3 3/4
3 1/4
Hint: Divide 13 by 4. The quotient is the number of wholes. The remainder becomes the numerator of the fraction part, over 4.
Question 3
Which mixed number belongs at the ? on the number line?
- 2 1/6
- 1 1/3
- 1 1/6
- 1 1/7
1 1/6
Hint: Each whole is split into 6 equal jumps, so each jump is 1/6. Find the whole number just before the ?, then count the jumps past it.
Question 4
What is the ratio of red counters to blue counters?
π΄π΄π΄π΄π΄π΅π΅π΅π΅π΅π΅- 6:5
- 5:11
- 5:6
- 11:5
5:6
Hint: Count each group. Write the numbers in the same order as the words: first : second.
Question 5
Which is greater: 10/8 or 1 1/8?
- They are equal
- 1 1/8
- 10/8
10/8
Hint: Write the mixed number as an improper fraction with denominator 8: 1 1/8 = 9/8. Then compare the numerators.
Question 6
Each whole is cut into 6 equal parts. Write the shaded amount as an improper fraction.
answer box
15/6
Hint: Count every shaded part: 2 full wholes are 12 parts, plus 3 more. Put the total over 6.
Question 7
Write the mixed number 6 1/3 as an improper fraction.
answer box
19/3
Hint: Multiply the whole number by the denominator, then add the numerator: 6 Γ 3 + 1. Keep the denominator, 3.
Question 8
The ratio of fiction books to non-fiction books on a classroom shelf is 5:1. There are 25 fiction books. How many non-fiction books are there?
answer box
5

Question 9
Which mixed number is equal to 7/3?
- 1 2/3
- 2 2/3
- 2 1/3
- 3 1/3
2 1/3
Hint: Divide 7 by 3. The quotient is the number of wholes. The remainder becomes the numerator of the fraction part, over 3.
Question 10
Each whole is cut into 4 equal parts. Write the shaded amount as an improper fraction.
answer box
