Grade 6 Volume & Capacity worksheet
from Gradelings · Name: ______________________
How to explain it
- Volume is the space inside a solid, in cubic units like cm³.
- Volume of a rectangular prism = length × width × height.
- 1 cm³ holds 1 mL. 1000 mL is 1 L.
Example: A box is 5 cm long, 4 cm wide and 3 cm high. What is its volume? 5 × 4 = 20. 20 × 3 = 60. Answer: 60 cm³
Question 1
Which box has the greatest volume?
- 5 cm × 3 cm × 8 cm
- 10 cm × 10 cm × 8 cm
- 5 cm × 4 cm × 3 cm
- 6 cm × 6 cm × 5 cm
10 cm × 10 cm × 8 cm
Hint: Work out each volume (length × width × height), then compare. A box can be longer but still hold less.
Question 2
Write 7250 mL in litres.
answer boxL
7.25 L
Hint: 1 L = 1000 mL. To change litres to millilitres, multiply by 1000. To change millilitres to litres, divide by 1000.
Question 3
A rectangular prism is 10 cm long, 3 cm wide and 8 cm high. What is its volume?
answer boxcm³
240 cm³
Hint: Volume = length × width × height. Multiply two of the numbers first, then multiply by the third.
Question 4
Which unit is best for measuring the volume of a shipping container?
- millilitres (mL)
- square metres (m²)
- cubic centimetres (cm³)
- cubic metres (m³)
cubic metres (m³)
Hint: Volume is measured in cubic units. A shipping container is huge, so use metre cubes.
Question 5
A box has a volume of 189 cm³. It is 3 cm long and 7 cm wide. How high is it?
answer boxcm
9 cm
Hint: Volume = length × width × height. The base is 3 × 7 = 21 cm², so divide the volume by 21.
Question 6
A fish tank is 10 cm long, 20 cm wide and 10 cm high. 1 cm³ holds 1 mL. How many litres of water does the full tank hold?
answer boxL
2 L
Hint: Find the volume in cm³, which equals the capacity in mL. Then divide by 1000 to change mL to litres.
Question 7
This is the bottom layer of a box packed with 1 cm cubes. The box is 4 layers high. What is the volume of the box?
🧊🧊🧊🧊🧊🧊answer boxcm³
24 cm³
Hint: Find the number of cubes in one layer (rows × columns), then multiply by the number of layers.
Question 8
A jug holds 6 L of lemonade. How many 500 mL glasses can it fill?
🍋6 Lanswer box
12
Hint: Change litres to millilitres (× 1000), then divide by 500.
Question 9
A small box is 5 cm long, 5 cm wide and 4 cm high. 1 cm³ holds 1 mL. How many millilitres of water would fill it?
answer boxmL
100 mL
Hint: Find the volume in cm³ (length × width × height). Each cm³ holds 1 mL, so the number is the same.
Question 10
A jug holds 2.5 L of lemonade. How many 500 mL glasses can it fill?
🍋2.5 Lanswer box
5
Hint: Change litres to millilitres (× 1000), then divide by 500.
Answer key
- 1. 10 cm × 10 cm × 8 cm
- 2. 7.25 L
- 3. 240 cm³
- 4. cubic metres (m³)
- 5. 9 cm
- 6. 2 L
- 7. 24 cm³
- 8. 12
- 9. 100 mL
- 10. 5
