Grade 6 Probability worksheet
from Gradelings · Name: ______________________
How to explain it
- Probability = favourable outcomes ÷ all possible outcomes.
- It can be written as a fraction, a decimal or a percent.
- Experimental probability comes from trials. Theoretical comes from counting outcomes.
Example: A die is rolled. What is the probability of an even number? Even numbers: 2, 4, 6. That is 3 outcomes. There are 6 outcomes in all. 3/6 = 1/2. Answer: 1/2
Question 1
The spinner has 8 equal sections. What is the probability of landing on blue?
answer box
6/8
Hint: Probability = favourable outcomes ÷ total outcomes. Count the blue sections and write that number over 8.
Question 2
A bag holds the marbles in the table. You pick one without looking. What is the probability it is purple?
Marbles in the bag Colour Number 🔵 blue 4 🟣 purple 7 🔴 red 9 - 7/13
- 9/20
- 13/20
- 7/20
7/20
Hint: Probability = marbles of that colour ÷ all the marbles. Add up every marble in the table to find the total first.
Question 3
Jay takes 50 basketball free throws and makes 34 of them. What is the experimental probability of making a shot?
answer box
34/50
Hint: Experimental probability = number of times it happened ÷ total number of trials.
Question 4
Where does this event belong on a probability line from 0 to 1: rolling a 1 on a 20-sided die?
- Close to 1 (likely)
- 1/2 (equally likely)
- 1 (certain)
- 0 (impossible)
- Close to 0 (unlikely)
Close to 0 (unlikely)
Hint: 0 means it can never happen and 1 means it is certain. 1/2 means it is just as likely to happen as not.
Question 5
You roll a fair 6-sided die numbered 1 to 6. What is the probability of rolling a 5?
answer box
1/6
Hint: List the outcomes that work: 5. Write how many there are over the 6 equally likely outcomes.
Question 6
If you spin this spinner 24 times, about how many times would you expect it to land on green?
answer box
8
Hint: The theoretical probability of green is green sections ÷ 6. Find that fraction of 24: divide 24 by 6, then multiply by the number of green sections.
Question 7
A mystery spinner was spun 38 times. Based on these results, which colour probably covers the most space on the spinner?
Spinner results - green
- purple
- red
- yellow
yellow
Hint: The colour that comes up most often over many trials probably has the biggest section. More trials make the prediction more reliable.
Question 8
Jay flips a fair coin 50 times and gets 23 heads. Which statement is true?
- The coin must be unfair.
- The experimental probability of heads (23/50) is higher than the theoretical probability (1/2).
- The experimental probability of heads (23/50) is lower than the theoretical probability (1/2).
- The theoretical probability of heads is 23/50.
The experimental probability of heads (23/50) is lower than the theoretical probability (1/2).
Hint: Theoretical probability comes from equally likely outcomes: heads is 1 of 2. Experimental probability comes from real results, which often differ a little, especially with fewer trials.
Question 9
Leo flips a coin 20 times and gets heads 8 times. What is the experimental probability of heads?
answer box
8/20
Hint: Experimental probability = number of times it happened ÷ total number of trials.
Question 10
The spinner has 4 equal sections. What is the probability of landing on green?
answer box
2/4
Hint: Probability = favourable outcomes ÷ total outcomes. Count the green sections and write that number over 4.
Answer key
- 1. 6/8
- 2. 7/20
- 3. 34/50
- 4. Close to 0 (unlikely)
- 5. 1/6
- 6. 8
- 7. yellow
- 8. The experimental probability of heads (23/50) is lower than the theoretical probability (1/2).
- 9. 8/20
- 10. 2/4
