What your child practices
Adding equal rows to find the total in an array (up to 5 by 5), and cutting a rectangle into rows and columns of squares. This gets ready for multiplication.
Alabama Course of Study content standard: 2.4; 2.26 · adding to find the total in arrays, and splitting a rectangle into rows and columns of squares
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- An array has equal rows.
- Add the same number once for each row.
- This is a first step to multiplying.
Example: 3 rows with 4 in each row. How many in all? 4 + 4 + 4 = 12. Answer: 12
