Equations
Order of operations, solve for n
What your child practices
Using the order of operations (brackets, then × and ÷, then + and −) and solving one-step equations like 6n = 42 with inverse operations, including writing equations for word problems.
Alabama Course of Study content standard: 6.18; 6.19 · checking solutions by substitution and solving equations of the form x + p = q and px = q
How we explain it
Children can open this short lesson before they practice.
- Follow the order of operations: brackets first.
- Then multiply and divide, left to right.
- Then add and subtract, left to right.
Example: 4 + 3 × 2 = ? Multiply first: 3 × 2 = 6. Then add: 4 + 6 = 10. Answer: 10
Equations in Alabama
In the Alabama Course of Study, this is unit 6 of 17 in 6th grade Math, after Patterns & Graphs and before Perimeter & Area.
Gradelings describes a child's practice on this unit as Beginning, Approaching, Meeting or Exceeding (Four practice steps). That reflects practice, not a report-card mark: the teacher decides the mark.

Question 1
What is the value of 2 + 9 × 4?
2 + 9 × 4 = ?
- 22
- 44
- 38
- 15
38
Hint: Order of operations: brackets first, then × and ÷ from left to right, then + and − from left to right. Multiply first: 9 × 4 = 36. Then add 2.
Question 2
What is (13 + 11) × 9?
(13 + 11) × 9 = ?
answer box
216
Hint: Order of operations: brackets first, then × and ÷ from left to right, then + and − from left to right. Brackets first: 13 + 11 = 24. Then multiply by 9.
Question 3
Leo buys 7 packs of stickers with the same number in each pack. That's 49 stickers in all. Which equation could find n, the number of stickers in one pack?
- n − 7 = 49
- 7n = 49
- n ÷ 7 = 49
- n + 7 = 49
7n = 49
Hint: Ask what happens to the unknown amount n: is something added to it, taken away, multiplied or shared? Write that action with n.
Question 4
Solve for n.
n ÷ 12 = 10
answer box
120
Hint: Undo dividing: multiply both sides by 12. n = 10 × 12.
Question 5
Which step solves x + 57 = 105 for x?
x + 57 = 105
- Multiply both sides by 57
- Subtract 57 from both sides
- Add 57 to both sides
- Divide both sides by 57
Subtract 57 from both sides
Hint: Use the inverse (opposite) operation: subtraction undoes addition, and division undoes multiplication.
Question 6
Leo had some hockey cards. After getting 16 more, Leo has 64. How many cards did Leo start with?
answer box
48
Hint: Write an equation, like n + 16 = 64. Then use the inverse operation to find n.
